Lyric opera enthusiasts will particularly appreciate evenings dedicated to Dalmatian repertoire, where voices echo among the palace columns.
Open-air concerts in the palace
Ancient ruins serve as a spectacular backdrop for summer concerts, offering natural acoustics that enhance international artists' performances from June to September 2024. The programme offers a blend of alternative rock and world music, with local groups alongside global stars.
Available on-site or online, tickets range from €25 to €80, depending on the artists. For the best seats in the central courtyard, where the view and sound are perfect, arrive early. Concerts typically begin at sunset, when the stone takes on a rosy hue.
Summer beach parties
Bačvice Beach is the heart of Split's summer celebrations. From 6 p.m. onwards, DJs at beachside bars get crowds dancing until dawn. Beach clubs compete to attract party-goers with exotic cocktails, sand dance-floors, and varied entertainment. Vanilla Club, a 20-minute walk from the centre, offers unforgettable evenings with magnificent views of the Adriatic. For an even more festive experience, board the boat parties departing from the port each afternoon. These cruises often include entry to the city's best clubs to continue the party until morning.
Traditional cultural festivals
The Rijeka Carnival in February
The Grand Carnival of Rijeka, from January 17 to March 5, 2024, transforms the city into a living spectacle. This historic tradition draws over 150,000 spectators and brings together more than 10,000 costumed participants. The zvončari, wearing sheepskins and large bells, parade through the streets to chase away evil spirits, according to an ancient custom. On February 15, the children's parade on the Korzo adds a touch of joy to the event. The carnival's climax takes place on March 2 with the grand international parade. Colourful floats and masked groups from around the world fill the streets. The festivities conclude with the burning of Pust, a puppet symbolising the hardships of the past year.
The Feast of Saint Blaise in Dubrovnik
Every year, on February 2 and 3, Dubrovnik celebrates its patron saint in a unique atmosphere. This thousand-year-old tradition, inscribed on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list, brings residents and visitors together in great devotion. Celebrations begin with the release of white doves over the main square, followed by the throat-healing ritual. Then the city comes alive with theatrical performances and concerts. In the evening, the Stradun is lit up and the streets are filled with the aroma of local specialities sold at stands. This blend of spirituality and culture offers an opportunity to discover the soul of Dubrovnik.
The Summer Evenings of Varaždin
Each late September, the Baroque Evenings of Varaždin transform the city into a grand open-air musical theatre. Baroque music fills the castle and Gothic churches. The 2024 programme highlights international ensembles playing period instruments. Concerts are accompanied by baroque painting exhibitions and eighteenth-century costume theatrical recreations. Workshops allow visitors to learn to play the harpsichord or viola da gamba. Tickets cost between €30 and €75 and grant access to performances in the city's historic monuments.
