Opatija
Nicknamed the Pearl of the Adriatic, Opatija enchants with Belle Époque villas, the Lungomare promenade and Kvarner beaches along the Croatie Riviera.
Dubbed the "Pearl of the Adriatic," Opatija captivates with its old-world charm and Mediterranean elegance. This magnificent Croatie seaside resort, nestled between Mount Učka and the Adriatic Sea, was the country's first tourist destination. Its sumptuous Belle Époque villas and lush gardens still bear witness today to its prestigious past, when European aristocracy would come to stay. Just 18 kilometers from Rijeka, Opatija offers a perfect blend of historical heritage and modern seaside activities.
History
Originally inhabited by the Liburnians, descendants of the Illyrians, the Opatija region became Croatie territory in the Middle Ages. Under the Austro-Hungarian monarchy, Opatija gained popularity as a favored destination for aristocrats and artists.
In 1889, the city was declared a climatic health resort by Emperor Francis Joseph I, later attracting monarchs such as German Emperor Wilhelm II and King of Romania Carol I. After World War I, it came under Italian control, before being integrated into Yugoslavia in 1947, then Croatie in 1991.
Opatija remains today a world-renowned tourist destination, welcoming new hotels and campsites.
