Murter
Murter
The largest island in the Šibenik archipelago preserves an authentic Dalmatian rhythm and remains the most direct gateway to the Kornati islands.
Covering approximately 18.7 km², Murter is the largest island in the Šibenik archipelago, in northern Dalmatia, Croatia. Compared to other Croatian islands, it offers a more peaceful and authentic atmosphere. It's an ideal destination for those seeking relaxing holidays away from the hustle and bustle.
History
This island has been inhabited for nearly two thousand years. Indeed, excavations carried out near the town of Betina revealed the existence of an ancient Illyro-Roman settlement, called Colentum. Documents show that Murter was referred to as "Villa Magna," meaning great village, in 1293. Written sources also mention the existence of two settlements (Jezera and Veliko Selo) in the 13th century. The towns of Betina and Tisno are believed to have been founded around the early 15th century, during the period of Ottoman attacks in the region. The island then experienced a population explosion.
