History

Bale boasts a rich history stretching back to prehistoric times. This village was originally a fortress, probably founded in the Bronze Age (2nd millennium BC), as evidenced today by its layout, with circular streets built around the summit of a hilltop.

During the Roman era, life shifted to the surrounding plains, where large rural villas emerged, becoming centres for agriculture and land exploitation. However, towards the end of Antiquity, inhabitants regrouped at the original site. Later, the fortress became an important bulwark to protect access south of Pula. The settlement was first mentioned in 983, under the name Castrum Vallis.

The etymology of Bale remains uncertain: some believe it derives from the Latin word vallum, meaning "defensive ditch", while others associate it with vallis, which means "valley".

Beyond its human history, Bale is also renowned for its palaeontological heritage. The region has yielded remarkable dinosaur fossils, including those of the Histriasaurus. Other fossils, belonging to dinosaurs such as the Camarasauridae, Titanosauriformes, Somphospondyli and Theropods, have also been found here.

Tourism in Bale: what to do in the village and surroundings?

Wandering through its streets

The cobbled streets of Bale invite an enchanting stroll. Venetian architecture reveals itself at every corner through ogival windows and ornate balconies. Local artisans display their creations in small shops tucked beneath arcades, while cafés offer shaded terraces for a refreshing break.

The Soardo-Bembo Castle, built in the 16th century, is Bale's number one attraction. This imposing edifice, featuring two square towers, was constructed in the 16th century by the Soardo family. It is today owned by the Bembo family. The castle was entirely renovated in 2012. It is a masterpiece of Venetian Gothic architecture.

The town hall, nestled near the castle, also boasts interesting architecture. It dates from the 14th century and features a loggia adorned with Gothic arches.

Don't miss the many churches in the village either. Among the most beautiful are the Sveti Duh (Holy Spirit) church, which preserves superb 15th-century frescoes, and the parish church of Saint Julian, which dazzles with its imposing 36-metre-high bell tower.
