Visovac
Franciscan monastery islet at the heart of Krka National Park, in Dalmatia. Five centuries of history, rare manuscripts and boat access from Skradin or Brištane.
Visovac is an islet home to a Franciscan monastery located on a lake in the Krka National Park, in Dalmatia, southern Croatie. Nicknamed "the Island of the Mother of God," this site combines five centuries of Franciscan history, a rare library, and a lakeside setting ideal for a short visit (1-2 hours on site, crossing included).
Why visit Visovac?
- An active Franciscan monastery since the 15th century, on a limestone islet in the middle of Lake Visovac.
- A historic library housing manuscripts, Ottoman edicts, and an illustrated copy of Aesop's Fables dated to 1487.
- Access only by boat, which naturally integrates into an excursion through Krka National Park.
- Two panoramic viewpoints (Brištane and the Drinovci road) for those who prefer not to make the crossing.
History of the site
Before the arrival of Augustinian monks in the 14th century, the island bore the Latin name Lapis Alba, meaning "white stone," referring to the color of its rock. The Augustinians built a church dedicated to the Apostle Paul, laying the first stones of the location's religious vocation.
In the 15th century, the island became a refuge for Franciscans fleeing Ottoman advances in Bosnia. They founded the monastery that would transform Visovac into a regional spiritual and cultural center. In 1645, an Ottoman attack deeply affected the community: two elderly brothers were hanged from elm trees at the monastery.
The building underwent renewal in the 18th century with Baroque reconstruction, followed by restoration in the 20th century. It retains its function as a sanctuary today and bears witness to more than five hundred years of monastic continuity.
What to see on the island?
The monastery and its gardens
The entire complex can be explored on foot in about an hour. The interior arcades, planted pathways, and stone benches overlooking the lake structure the visit. The Baroque architecture, restored in the 20th century, remains understated, in keeping with the site's ongoing liturgical use. Light refreshments are available on the island.
The museum and library
The monastery museum brings together rare pieces:
- An illustrated copy of Aesop's Fables dated to 1487, presented as one of very few known copies (the monastery mentions three copies worldwide).
- Ottoman Sultan edicts, testament to relations between the monastery and the Ottoman Empire.
- A sabre belonging to a 17th-century Croatian military leader.
- Embroidered liturgical vestments and reliquaries, heritage of five centuries of Franciscan history.
- A collection of ancient manuscripts and liturgical books.
Exterior viewpoints
For those who don't make the crossing, two viewing points overlook the islet:
- The panoramic viewpoint at Brištane, which frames the island and its monastery from the shore.
- The viewpoint on the Drinovci road, appreciated in the late afternoon for the light on the façade.
Practical information
- Duration of visit: allow 1-2 hours on site, not including boat travel.
- Price: moderate admission for the monastery and museum; boat crossing is generally included in Krka National Park excursion tickets.
- Hours: seasonal opening, aligned with park boat schedules. Check with the Skradin visitor center before departing.
- Dress code: active monastery, plan for clothing that covers shoulders and knees.
When to visit?
Visovac follows the seasonality of Krka National Park. The period from April to October concentrates boat rotations and regular museum opening. May-June and September offer a good balance between pleasant weather, lake water levels, and manageable crowds. In July-August, the entire park sees heavy traffic; morning visits are preferable.
How to get there?
From Stinice or Remetic
The islet is accessible by boat from Stinice and Remetic, two hamlets near the village of Brištane. According to the monastery's communication, the Sunday crossing is arranged by the Franciscans; as this practice may change, it's prudent to confirm locally.
From Skradin, as an excursion in the park
Departing from Skradin, boat excursions through Krka National Park combine a visit to Visovac with the waterfalls of Skradinski Buk and Roski Slap. This is the most common option for visitors without a vehicle to reach Brištane.
